What pros know

  • Wet sand weighs noticeably more than dry. Bulk sand straight from an outdoor pile is rarely dry. Source
  • Paver bedding should be coarse concrete sand, not play sand or stone dust. Source
0.3 cu yd
Drawn to scale: your pile is about 1.5 ft tall and 4.7 ft across, next to a full-size pickup and a 5 ft 9 in person.

Which sand for which job

Concrete sand is coarse and is the usual bedding layer under pavers, about 1 inch thick. Masonry sand is finer and softer. Play sand is washed and screened for sandboxes. All of them weigh about the same per yard when dry, but sand from an outdoor pile is rarely dry.

Building a patio? The paver patio planner adds the bedding sand, base, pavers, joint sand, and edging in one list. For the joints themselves, use the polymeric sand calculator.

How to measure

Measure the length and width in feet, multiply for square feet, then decide the depth in inches. For odd shapes, split the area into rectangles, circles, and triangles and add them up; the calculator lets you add as many areas as you need and subtract cut-outs like a tree ring or an air-conditioner pad.

No tape measure? Open the Draw on satellite map tab, find your address, and trace the outline. Or use Pace it off: count steps along each side. Measure depth in a few spots, because ground is rarely flat.

Want the area on its own first? The lawn size calculator measures any part of your yard and carries it into the other calculators.

Coverage by depth

One cubic yard covers about 324 sq ft at 1 in, the usual paver bedding depth.

Weight per cubic yard

A cubic yard of sand weighs 2,600 to 2,900 lb (about 1.38 tons typical). Moisture is the big swing: the same pile weighs more after rain.

Bags versus bulk

It takes 54 bags of 0.5 cu ft to make one cubic yard, and each bag weighs about 50 lb. Bags cost more per yard but skip the delivery fee and the minimum order. Bulk is cheaper per yard once the delivery fee is spread over enough material.

With example prices of $6 a bag, $50 a yard in bulk, and $100 delivery, bulk starts winning at about 0.5 cubic yards. These are examples, not your local prices: type your own into the Order Ticket above and it recalculates the break-even.

Do not forget the labor. One cubic yard in bags means lifting 54 bags, about 2,750 lb in total, twice: into the cart and out of the car.

Hauling it yourself

One cubic yard of sand weighs about 2,750 lb. A full-size half-ton pickup typically carries 1,500 to 2,300 lb, and a midsize pickup 1,100 to 1,700 lb. Your exact number is on the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the driver's door jamb.

That means weight runs out first. At the low end of a half-ton's payload, you can carry only about 0.55 cubic yards per trip, even though a 6.5 ft bed holds about 2.1 level full. A bed that looks half empty can already be over the limit.

The Haul Check in the calculator does this math for your truck and your load, and tells you how many trips it takes.

What pros know

Common mistakes

  • Using play sand or stone dust as paver bedding. Bedding should be coarse concrete sand.
  • Compacting the bedding sand before laying pavers. Screed it smooth and leave it loose.
  • Underestimating weight. A yard of sand is well over a ton, more when wet.

Questions people ask

How much does a yard of sand weigh?

Dry sand weighs about 2,600 to 2,900 lb per cubic yard, around 1.4 tons. Wet sand can be 3,000 lb or more.

How many bags of sand are in a yard?

About 54 bags of 50 lb (0.5 cu ft each) make one cubic yard.

How much sand do I need under pavers?

A 1 inch bedding layer. One cubic yard covers about 324 sq ft at 1 inch, so a 200 sq ft patio needs about 0.6 cubic yards, or around 34 bags.

How much sand do I need for a sandbox?

Multiply length x width x depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 5 by 5 ft sandbox filled 12 inches deep takes about 0.93 cubic yards, or around 50 bags of 50 lb.

What is the difference between play sand and paver sand?

Play sand is fine, washed, and soft for kids. Paver bedding sand is coarse concrete sand that holds a screeded surface. Polymeric sand is a different product for the joints.
