Haul Check
Typical 1,500 to 2,300 lb. We use the low end until you enter yours.
Check the Tire and Loading Information sticker on your driver's door jamb for your exact payload.
#57 stone hits your payload long before your bed is full.
That is 1,870 lb over your payload. You need 3 trips.
Split it into 3 loads of about 0.43 cu yd (1,120 lb) each, or get it delivered instead. At this many trips, delivery usually costs less than your time and fuel.

Which gravel, and how deep
“Gravel” covers a lot of different stone. Clean, angular stone like #57 drains well and is the middle layer of most driveways. Crusher run has stone dust mixed in, so it packs hard and makes a firm top or base. Pea gravel is rounded, pretty, and comfortable for paths, but it rolls under tires. Pick the material in the calculator and the weight, compaction, and bag sizes change with it.
Depth depends on the job: about 2 inches for decorative cover, 3 to 4 inches for paths and patios, and 8 inches or more across several layers for a driveway. For a full driveway, the gravel driveway planner builds all the layers and the fabric in one bill of materials.
How to measure
Measure the length and width in feet, multiply for square feet, then decide the depth in inches. For odd shapes, split the area into rectangles, circles, and triangles and add them up; the calculator lets you add as many areas as you need and subtract cut-outs like a tree ring or an air-conditioner pad.
No tape measure? Open the Draw on satellite map tab, find your address, and trace the outline. Or use Pace it off: count steps along each side. Measure depth in a few spots, because ground is rarely flat.
Want the area on its own first? The lawn size calculator measures any part of your yard and carries it into the other calculators.
Coverage by depth
One cubic yard covers about 81 sq ft at 4 in deep.
| Depth | 1 cu yd covers | 1 bag (0.5 cu ft) covers | Yards per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft | 6 sq ft | 0.31 |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 3 sq ft | 0.62 |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 2 sq ft | 0.93 |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 1.5 sq ft | 1.23 |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft | 1 sq ft | 1.85 |
| 8 in | 41 sq ft | 0.8 sq ft | 2.47 |
Weight per cubic yard
A cubic yard of #57 stone weighs 2,400 to 2,800 lb (about 1.3 tons typical). Moisture is the big swing: the same pile weighs more after rain.
| Material | Low | Typical | High | Tons per yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #57 crushed stone | 2,400 | 2,600 | 2,800 | 1.3 |
| Pea gravel | 2,600 | 2,800 | 2,900 | 1.4 |
| Crusher run (dense grade, with fines) | 2,800 | 3,100 | 3,400 | 1.55 |
| #3 or #4 base stone | 2,400 | 2,600 | 2,800 | 1.3 |
| River rock | 2,500 | 2,700 | 2,900 | 1.35 |
| Stone screenings (stone dust) | 2,600 | 2,800 | 3,000 | 1.4 |
| Decomposed granite | 2,700 | 2,850 | 3,000 | 1.43 |
| Paver base (crushed) | 2,800 | 3,000 | 3,200 | 1.5 |

Bags versus bulk
It takes 54 bags of 0.5 cu ft to make one cubic yard, and each bag weighs about 50 lb. Bags cost more per yard but skip the delivery fee and the minimum order. Bulk is cheaper per yard once the delivery fee is spread over enough material.
With example prices of $6 a bag, $50 a yard in bulk, and $100 delivery, bulk starts winning at about 0.5 cubic yards. These are examples, not your local prices: type your own into the Order Ticket above and it recalculates the break-even.
Do not forget the labor. One cubic yard in bags means lifting 54 bags, about 2,600 lb in total, twice: into the cart and out of the car.
Hauling it yourself
One cubic yard of #57 stone weighs about 2,600 lb. A full-size half-ton pickup typically carries 1,500 to 2,300 lb, and a midsize pickup 1,100 to 1,700 lb. Your exact number is on the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the driver's door jamb.
That means weight runs out first. At the low end of a half-ton's payload, you can carry only about 0.58 cubic yards per trip, even though a 6.5 ft bed holds about 2.1 level full. A bed that looks half empty can already be over the limit.
The Haul Check in the calculator does this math for your truck and your load, and tells you how many trips it takes.
What pros know
- #57 is the drainage layer. It does not lock together on its own, so most driveways cap it with crusher run or screenings. (Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies)
- Stone names vary by state. Ask for the size (about 3/4 in to 1 in, clean) if your yard does not use the # numbers. (Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies)
Common mistakes
- Ordering by bed size instead of weight. A yard of gravel is often more than a half-ton pickup can legally carry.
- Forgetting compaction on crusher run, DG, and paver base. You end up 15 to 20 percent short after the plate compactor.
- Using pea gravel on a driveway or slope. It rolls, ruts, and migrates into the lawn.
- Skipping fabric on soft soil. Stone pressed into mud is stone you paid for and cannot see.
Questions people ask
How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
Most gravel weighs about 2,400 to 3,400 lb per cubic yard, roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons. Clean #57 stone is around 2,600 lb; crusher run, with its fines, is heavier at about 3,100 lb. Wet stone weighs more.
How much area does a ton of gravel cover?
A ton of #57 stone covers about 125 sq ft at 2 in deep, or 62 sq ft at 4 in. Heavier gravels cover a little less per ton.
How many tons of gravel do I need?
Work out cubic yards first (length x width x depth in feet, divided by 27), then multiply by the weight per yard and divide by 2,000. The calculator shows tons next to cubic yards for every stone that is sold by the ton.
How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
A typical gravel driveway uses 8 to 12 inches of stone in layers: a coarse base, a middle layer of #57, and a top of crusher run or screenings. A 50 by 10 ft driveway at that depth is well over 15 cubic yards, so it is a delivery job.
Can I haul a yard of gravel in a pickup?
Usually not in one trip with a half-ton. A cubic yard weighs about 2,600 lb, and many half-ton pickups carry 1,500 to 2,300 lb. Check your door-jamb sticker and use the Haul Check above.
Is it cheaper to buy gravel in bags or bulk?
For anything past a few wheelbarrows, bulk is almost always cheaper. One yard is 54 half-cubic-foot bags. Enter your local prices in the Order Ticket to see the exact break-even.
