Bulk is cheaper above 0.5 cu yd. Bulk saves you $55 on this job.
Bags mean lifting 35 bags (about 1,750 lb in total). Bulk means about 7 wheelbarrow trips at 2.5 cu ft a load.

River rock hits your payload long before your bed is full.
That is 250 lb over your payload. You need 2 trips.

Rock is sold by the ton, planned by the yard
You measure a bed in square feet and inches, but most landscape yards price rock by the ton. This calculator does both: it works out the cubic yards from your measurements, then converts to tons using the weight of the rock you pick.
The usual depth for decorative rock is about 2 inches, or roughly twice the size of the stone so no soil shows through. Larger river rock needs 3 to 4 inches. Lay landscape fabric first, or the rock slowly sinks into the soil and weeds come up between the stones.
How to measure
Measure the length and width in feet, multiply for square feet, then decide the depth in inches. For odd shapes, split the area into rectangles, circles, and triangles and add them up; the calculator lets you add as many areas as you need and subtract cut-outs like a tree ring or an air-conditioner pad.
No tape measure? Open the Draw on satellite map tab, find your address, and trace the outline. Or use Pace it off: count steps along each side. Measure depth in a few spots, because ground is rarely flat.
Want the area on its own first? The lawn size calculator measures any part of your yard and carries it into the other calculators.
Coverage by depth
One cubic yard covers about 162 sq ft at 2 in deep.
| Depth | 1 cu yd covers | 1 bag (0.5 cu ft) covers | Yards per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft | 6 sq ft | 0.31 |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 3 sq ft | 0.62 |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 2 sq ft | 0.93 |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 1.5 sq ft | 1.23 |
Weight per cubic yard
A cubic yard of river rock weighs 2,500 to 2,900 lb (about 1.35 tons typical). Moisture is the big swing: the same pile weighs more after rain.
| Material | Low | Typical | High | Tons per yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| River rock | 2,500 | 2,700 | 2,900 | 1.35 |
| Pea gravel | 2,600 | 2,800 | 2,900 | 1.4 |
| #57 crushed stone | 2,400 | 2,600 | 2,800 | 1.3 |
| Decomposed granite | 2,700 | 2,850 | 3,000 | 1.43 |

Bags versus bulk
It takes 54 bags of 0.5 cu ft to make one cubic yard, and each bag weighs about 50 lb. Bags cost more per yard but skip the delivery fee and the minimum order. Bulk is cheaper per yard once the delivery fee is spread over enough material.
With example prices of $7 a bag, $90 a yard in bulk, and $100 delivery, bulk starts winning at about 0.5 cubic yards. These are examples, not your local prices: type your own into the Order Ticket above and it recalculates the break-even.
Do not forget the labor. One cubic yard in bags means lifting 54 bags, about 2,700 lb in total, twice: into the cart and out of the car.
Hauling it yourself
One cubic yard of river rock weighs about 2,700 lb. A full-size half-ton pickup typically carries 1,500 to 2,300 lb, and a midsize pickup 1,100 to 1,700 lb. Your exact number is on the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the driver's door jamb.
That means weight runs out first. At the low end of a half-ton's payload, you can carry only about 0.56 cubic yards per trip, even though a 6.5 ft bed holds about 2.1 level full. A bed that looks half empty can already be over the limit.
The Haul Check in the calculator does this math for your truck and your load, and tells you how many trips it takes.
What pros know
- Lay landscape fabric first. Rock on bare soil sinks in and weeds grow up through it. (Washington State University Extension)
- Rock holds heat. Next to a south-facing wall it can stress nearby plants. (University of Florida IFAS Extension)
Common mistakes
- Ordering rock by yards when the yard sells by tons, or the reverse. Convert before you compare quotes.
- Spreading rock thinner than its own size. You will see soil between the stones.
- Skipping fabric under rock beds.
- Putting dark rock in full sun next to plants that dislike heat.
Questions people ask
How much landscape rock do I need?
Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. At 2 inches deep, one cubic yard covers about 162 sq ft.
How much does a ton of river rock cover?
About 120 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or 80 sq ft at 3 inches, using a typical 2,700 lb per yard.
How deep should landscape rock be?
About 2 inches for small rock and pebbles, and 3 to 4 inches for larger river rock or a dry creek bed. A good rule is at least twice the size of the stone.
How much does a yard of landscape rock weigh?
River rock weighs about 2,500 to 2,900 lb per cubic yard, roughly 1.35 tons typical.
Do I need landscape fabric under rock?
In most beds, yes. Fabric keeps rock from sinking into the soil and slows weeds. Use a woven or heavy nonwoven fabric, not thin plastic.
