Polymeric Sand Calculator
Bags of joint sand from your patio size and joint width.
Quick answer
A 50 lb bag of polymeric sand covers about 65 to 85 sq ft of pavers with narrow joints, or 22 to 42 sq ft with wide joints, per one manufacturer's chart.

Measure the patio
Joints
Defaults are from one manufacturer's chart for 2 3/8 in pavers (50 lb bags). Thicker pavers, tumbled edges, and natural stone use more. Copy the numbers from the back of your bag.
You need
4 bags
Somewhere between 3 and 4 bags. Buy 4: an unopened bag is easy to return, and running out halfway means a visible seam in the joints.

Why joint width matters more than area
Polymeric sand fills the gaps between pavers, so the amount depends on how wide and deep those gaps are, not just the size of the patio. Narrow, tight joints use very little; wide joints around tumbled pavers or flagstone use two to three times as much.
The default ranges here come from one manufacturer's reference guide for 2 3/8 inch pavers. Every brand publishes its own chart on the bag. Enter those numbers for the best estimate.
How to measure
Measure the length and width in feet, multiply for square feet, then decide the depth in inches. For odd shapes, split the area into rectangles, circles, and triangles and add them up; the calculator lets you add as many areas as you need and subtract cut-outs like a tree ring or an air-conditioner pad.
No tape measure? Open the Draw on satellite map tab, find your address, and trace the outline. Or use Pace it off: count steps along each side. Measure depth in a few spots, because ground is rarely flat.
Want the area on its own first? The lawn size calculator measures any part of your yard and carries it into the other calculators.
Common mistakes
- Buying exactly the low estimate. Running out partway leaves a visible color change.
- Applying it to damp pavers or before rain. Follow the weather window on the bag.
- Leaving haze on the paver surface. Blow off every grain before wetting.
Questions people ask
How many bags of polymeric sand do I need?
Divide the patio area by the bag's coverage. With narrow joints, a 50 lb bag covers roughly 65 to 85 sq ft, so a 200 sq ft patio needs about 3 to 4 bags.
How much does a bag of polymeric sand cover?
It depends on joint width and paver size. One manufacturer lists 65 to 85 sq ft for narrow joints and 22 to 42 sq ft for wide joints per 50 lb bag.
Is polymeric sand the same as paver sand?
No. Paver bedding sand goes under the pavers. Polymeric sand goes in the joints and hardens when wetted.
Do thicker pavers need more polymeric sand?
Yes. Deeper joints hold more sand, so coverage per bag drops. Use the chart for your paver thickness.
Can I use leftover polymeric sand later?
Keep it sealed and dry. Once a bag absorbs moisture it can start to harden.
